I had the great pleasure of interviewing a great Paranormal Romance Author today. Welcome Crystal Dawn, author of The Mating Games, The Strong Pack, White Wolf Matriarchs, as well as other great series! I have yet to read anything from the Winged Beasts series, but everyone knows how much I love dragons, so I can’t wait to dive into that one!
If you have any questions, or would like to leave a comment, for Crystal, please feel free to do so. We love author/reader interaction here!

Welcome to PNRLovers, Crystal,
Tell us a little about yourself and your background?
Thank you for having me. It’s always nice to get an opportunity to interact with the readers.
I was an army brat until my dad retired when I was around ten and moved us to a farm in the Ozark Mountains. It was an enormous change from where we lived near Baltimore. We lived in a small community there as well so it wasn’t a city to country change which would have been even harder. My mom was a city girl from Germany so it was a difficult adjustment for her but she was tough. I’ve lived in or near NW Arkansas ever since.
Can you describe your style of writing for anyone who might not be familiar with your work?
A little bit crazy, I guess. I often pull a little bit of the behavior I grew up around, sometimes local places, and even historical facts when they fit, into the stories I write. There’s usually a lot of action and I prefer happy stories to sad ones but you can’t get away from the sad things completely. They are part of life and they just push their way in.
Do you work to an outline or plot or do you prefer just see where an idea takes you?
I know most authors like outlines and sometime I may try to see if it works better, but I just go with the flow. I do stop once in a while to think things out or to research an idea to make sure it fits. I also have excellent beta readers who aren’t afraid to let me know if something is just too crazy or doesn’t work.
Not all scenes are created equal. What scenes do you find easiest to write, and which make you groan?
I like action scenes, they seem to move along like a well-oiled machine. Sex scenes can go either way. Sometimes they practically write themselves and sometimes not so much. Figuring out when and how to end the book can be the hardest scene. Do you end it with romance or with a question to answer later? There are always things left unanswered, but in a series there is always hope the next book will tell it all.
How long on average does it take you to write a book?
That’s a hard question. It depends on the size and the type of book. Do you mean just the rough draft or until a book is finished? I try to set a goal off 5 K words a day. I rarely reach that. Last month was a rough month with a death and a near death in the family. I don’t thing I hit 5 K on the few days I did manage to write at all. I do manage to average a book a month from start to publishing. Some months I do bit better, but that makes up for bad months like March. On good days, I often sit at my computer 16 hours a day. I’m not a workaholic, I’m just passionate about writing and spend a lot of time working on writing and related things.
Are you planning on attending any writer conventions in the next year? How about a reader’s convention? If so, where are you going?
I won’t be able to attend any of those things this year because of family issues. Who knows, maybe next year.
Give us an insight into your main character of your current work in progress. What does he/she do that is so special? What makes him/her someone we’re going to love?
Cravr is an alien. The story is one of The Mating Games by my alter ego Catty Diva. He is one of ten brothers, number eight, who is searching for his fated mate. Among his people, mating is done in the family in birth order. All the brothers are deeply committed to their family, their planet, and their people. Once they find their mate she will be their whole world. Cravr is in charge of the law enforcement on his planet. He is strong, brave, and true. He’s the guy we all want as our one and only and he knows how to treat a female right.
And now for the silly… If you had to choose between living in one of your imaginary worlds, which one would you choose, and why? Who would be your hero?
I have several good ones to choose from. The white wolf world is a lot like the one I live in now if it had paranormal beings and powerful bloodlines. It is like someone took our world and threw in magic. There is a whole secret world within our world where werewolves, vampires, witches, and other supernaturals live without us humans being any the wiser. It’s an amazing world but I would still have access to the things I love in my world so that would make it perfect. All the alphas are incredible, but I would have to make my own hero because my heroines are tough and they fight to keep what’s theirs.
What’s in the works for you right now? When can we expect to see it released to the world?
I have Judah, The Strong Pack 3 finishing up in edits. It should be out in the next few days. Cravr is in progress and should be out this month. Lucille, White Wolf Matriarchs and Frankie’s Forever, Cousins of the Moon 3 will be out sometime in the next couple months.
Can you share an excerpt of your upcoming book, or recently released one?
“Female, something needs to happen between us and I believe you are aware of the fact.”
Her eyes were so big, deep blue, and he could just get lost in them. “Maybe.” She whispered and he felt like he had been granted a victory. Even though she hadn’t admitted it, what she had said showed she was aware of what was between them but refused to give in fully.
Jude would storm her gates claiming her for his own before she realized the battle had been waged. His inner wolf agreed, there was no more holding back, it was time to go forward, and claim a victory. He stroked her cheek lightly feeling her shiver. “We were meant to be together, now we need to figure out if it is for a night, a week, or forever.” Grabbing her hand he pulled her along.
He’d known where her room was since he had met her, making it his business to know. There were advantages of being the pack alpha’s son, one of which was no one would withhold any information from him. The feel of her hand in his was heavenly so he gripped it tight enough it would be a struggle to remove it. Mal wasn’t the type to unnecessarily make a scene. That was something he could use against her in this fight he fully intended to win.
They made it to her room before he knew it. “I know better than to ask you in.” Mal said. “What do you want to discuss?”
“Are you sure you want to do this in the hallway?” She blushed aware of what he was implying.
“No, but I’m sure I don’t want you in my room. I’m aware of what you want and I prefer to withhold those favors.”
“Who talks that way these days? I think you read too many historical romances.” He’d pissed her off but at least he’d gotten a reaction out of her. Bracing himself for a tongue lashing, he didn’t have long to wait.
Mal snorted. “At least I read, Caveman.”
“Not caveman, wolf. We are more primitive since we are part animal. You are wolf now too, best you never forget you are a primal animal.” He pushed her against the wall claiming her soft lips in a hard kiss. Her heart began to pound in her chest as her breathing sped up. Jude felt her temperature rise as her body released a flood of moisture between her legs in preparation for possession by an alpha wolf, him. Smelling her need made him growl which made her whimper. His knees grew weak, it turned him on that he could reduce such a strong and defiant female to one overcome with desire. His cock grew hard as a rock, desire making it ache.
It was unfortunate that his plan had been to show her how much she wanted him then back off. Maybe it was pride, but he needed her to admit out loud that she wanted him, needed him to take her. This was a battle of wills that the alpha in him needed to win. But she smelled so sweet as well as felt so damn good, he had to push the boundaries of what a couple should do in a public hallway. If they were caught it was all on him because he knew it was wrong but hell, he wanted to do it anyway.
Last but not least, where can our readers find all you great work and where can they find you online?
I always love to hear from readers.
