Dragons, duty, destined mates, and a deadly rival...
Silas Llewellyn, the last of a once-mighty dragon clan, doesn’t have time for anything but work and duty. He certainly doesn’t have time for love — not with a ruthless enemy plotting to destroy everything he holds dear. When a priceless diamond — one of the legendary Spirit Stones — surfaces in New York, Silas knows the jewel is nothing but trouble…just like the alluring woman who refuses to relinquish the gem.
Bartender Cassandra Nichols never asked to inherit a mysterious diamond, and she really never intended to come between two warring dragons. But with one near-miss escape after another, she has no choice but to choose sides. Before she knows it, she’s whisked by private jet to an oceanfront estate in Hawaii for her own “protection.” Is the enigmatic Mr. Llewellyn just another billionaire dragon who thinks he can claim anything he wants? Or is there more to the soulful stranger than meets the eye?
Although following some classical patterns observable in PNR books, this book has a feel that will simply pull you in and does not let go.
Cassandra is a bartender that inherited a precious gem and saved it from the auction. As a part witch, it is her duty to protect the diamond from falling into wrong hands – meaning, of course, the mortal enemy of all witches, the dragons. However, meeting some of their “representatives” at the auction shakes her opinions and makes her think twice – especially after one of them, Silas, protects her from his evil kin. Seeing no other options, Cassandra agrees to leave with Silas and his friends in order to protect the Windstone – and follow her heart.
This is the fifth book in this series, and despite having many advantages after reading the previous books, this book can be read as a standalone as well. Of course, some of the details might be lost, and the reader is not yet familiar with the other characters, but it does not make any harm. If this is the reader´s first contact with this series, the focus will be concentrated on Cassandra and Silas alone.
Peaceful and stunning nature of Maui and the sharp contrast with the earthquakes shaking the world of dragon shifters - that is a truly alluring mixture. Adding the inner storm raging in Silas´s mind thanks to the almost unbearable worries, and considering Cassandra´s infinite doubts and weak magic, and we have a great setup for this story.
I really liked the plotline, despite the stone being pushed into the background and zeroed on the complicated relationship between two strong individuals. What I appreciate most in the plot, though, is the opening left at the end for an additional story, when everything already seems clear and concluded.
Silas is the alpha that instantly wins over the reader´s heart. Driven by honor and duty, he wars with his own heart in his desperate effort to protect his friends and claim what is rightfully his – including his own mate, after all. Cassandra is a strong willed heroine that brings the fresh wind into his messed-up life, and like a glowing beacon, shows her mate the true meaning of strength and powerful union.
For true fans of paranormal romance who like the (maybe) common concepts told in a fresh, interesting way, this is the right pick.
