The Lick of Fire Collection from twelve best selling authors. Enter this supernatural world of fire and heat, magic and adventure, and get lost in everything DARK, delicious and FIRE.
Rising Darkness is the seventh story in the Lick of Fire Collection and the first in Élianne Adams’ Rising Series within the collection. It is a stand alone, full length novel featuring tortured phoenix shifters and the women who make them whole again.
He cannot die…
The phoenix will continuously rise from the ashes. For Zenon, this is his ultimate curse. Left to rot at the end of a chain for millennia, he is desperate to end the suffering of one horrendous demise, and rebirth, after another - to finally find peace. Desperate for anything other than his fated life of solitude. Desperate for his true death.
She cannot live…
Tormented by an unrelenting heart affliction, Nickie has to endure dying repeatedly. The physical pain of death is eclipsed only by the paralyzing fear of when her heart will stop beating next… and whether or not this time will be the last. That is, until she learns the myth of phoenix shifters, and the healing power they have over their human mates.
Together they could be everything…
An evil is rising. One more powerful than any the phoenix shifters have faced before. If Zenon and Nickie cannot convince the others to help, the pain they’ve already endured will pale in comparison to their future.
Emotional and heartbreaking paranormal romance that gets under the reader’s skin and leads to wondering why there is so much evil in the world.
Zenon is a phoenix shifter captured hundreds of years ago and tortured ever since, forced to die and be reborn all over again. Nickie is a human woman suffering from heart attacks every now and then, and surviving each of them, dying and coming back to life on repeat. After the explanation from a witch, she knows her life is tied to an immortal, and every time her mate dies, she does as well. Meeting Zenon and setting him free unites the couple, instantly flaring the powerful bond between them with sparkling energy. But to free the rest of the captured phoenixes, they must unite on far more intimate level than Nickie ever dreamt of.
Action-packed opening showing us the horrors of Zenon’s miserable life and Nickie’s bad condition pulls the reader fast into the story, playing the emotions very well. Pity, sadness, compassion, and strong urge to fix the bad with more love and goodness flooded my mind as I read through the introductory chapters.
However, once the introduction was finished and the main characters united, the pace slowed down, focusing more on the relationship between Nickie and Zenon and pushing the storyline too much into background. Not that I did not enjoy the turbulent relationship and raging hormones, but it sometimes felt like the reason why they were united in the first place and what was their mission was forgotten and the primal needs came to the forefront. This felt a bit unbalanced in my eyes.
What the book also lacked in my opinion is the explanation or at least hints of the motives for the antagonists’ acting. What lead to the capture of the phoenixes, and why were they tortured so much? Who are their captors, and what magic do they manipulate? We know next to nothing about them, and only a very little about the paranormal world of the shifters and the witches. I would love to know more and understand the situation better.
On the other side, the characters are well written, relatable and likeable, with clearly defined personalities and naturally developing interactions with the others (maybe faster than in the human world but that’s understandable).
The setup of the plot is very promising and attention catching, and with the right amount of romance and steamy scenes, it makes a very pleasurable read. It would be worth my time to read the rest of the series as well.
