A desperate woman.
An alien warrior whose craving knows no bounds.
A passion that will change the fate of humanity.
In a world where humanity has been hunted to near extinction, Rose is captured and on her way to be sold on the lucrative black market. Seizing her only chance, she escapes and finds fate waiting for her in the form of another captive of terrifying strength: a legendary Eok warrior.
Together, Rose and the Eok warrior Karian fight for their survival - and ultimately for the fate of the entire human race. During that fight, a dangerous attraction is born.
Karian, the unyielding Commander in Chief of the Eok armies, feels his control fading a little more every time he looks at the fragile but headstrong human. Soon, the call to make her his mate torments his body, turning his desires into an imperious craving. She seems to want him, too, but she has no idea of the consequences for her should he claim her.
Will Rose accept him as her bloodmate and seal both their destinies, before everything is lost?
Wow! Just wow! I’m not an alien romance reader normally, so when I got this book I kind of cringed. It’s not that I hate the idea because I love paranormal/fantasy/science fiction. It’s just that I’ve read some pretty rotten alien love stuff out there.
Not so in Ms. Auclair’s “Venomous Craving,” I was floored right from the first paragraph. First of all, what a way for the Hero/heroine to meet; how original was that. Rose is running and runs smack into a pod filled with a caged Karian. Karian is a Eok Warrior, the most feared of all alien races. Can she trust him? Can he trust her? Trust is a key theme in the book and runs straight on until the end.
I love the differences in the characters, they are complete opposites. Karian so calm and methodical, while Rose panics and jumps headfirst with her impulses. For example, when they crash onto the planet, Karian quickly devises a plan to get Rose to let him out of the cage. I can imagine his smooth, deep, hypnotic voice carefully spouting out logical reasons to her. In contrast, Rose is a terrified basket case as she tears the pod apart looking for supplies, and staying far away from Karian. I can imagine her even whining to Karian at times.
Once Karian’s body begins to push him to mate with Rose, and we see Roses’s attraction building towards Karian, the book really takes off. She is the lone human on his planet and others look at her as a circus freak. Her only thoughts stay on getting back to earth to save the few free-living humans still there. I found her very compassionate and true to this cause. Karian showed deep emotion by calming her fears and sending his own men to protect the human group.
During the mating ceremony, the crowd goes wild when it turns out the two are Bloodmates. Rose is confused and finally the two are able to give in to the physical and emotional demands of their bodies (in other words, they had amazing, earth-shattering alien sex). Karian still does not explain to Rose about Bloodmates. I enjoyed Rose’s confusion about this, while Karian, of course, plays it cool. I’m not going to explain Bloodmates here, you should read it for yourself. Let’s just say, where can I get me one of those?
The family dynamic of Karian’s inner circle is a little strange, but I adore his mother, especially. I’m so hoping that Ms. Auclair writes books for Karian’s hunky brothers. The book is romantic, erotic and suspenseful. You’ve got all types of aliens, technology that is easily explained, plenty of fighting, and saving the damsel in distress many, many times.
I loved this book. I give it 5 stars and would give more, if I could. I was really pulled into the story, setting, and characters. I started rooting for Rose and Karian’s HEA right from the start. The characters were well-developed and I would love a novella later on to check on these two. I’m a huge fan of Mary Auclair’s now and immediately after this book, I read one of her others. She’s on my radar now. Don’t miss this book, even if you think you don’t like alien romances. Don’t be so hasty to judge like I was.
